Hofstra Law’s Sports and Entertainment Law Society to Host Sports Law Roundtable on November 13
Hofstra Law’s Sports and Entertainment Law Society (SELS) will host the “Sports Law Roundtable, a conversation on current Professional and NCAA sports law issues, and why the game may never be the same” on Wednesday, November 13 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Room 308 of the law school.
The event, which is free, is being moderated by Gregg E. Clifton (’85), the principal and co-leader of the Collegiate and Professional Sports Practice Group at Jackson Lewis P.C. Among the panelists are Garrett Broshuis, Associate, Korein Tillery; Darren Heitner, Founder, Heitner Legal, P.L.L.C.; Kevin S. Parker, New York State Senator, 21st District; and Angela A. MODERATOR Gregg E. Clifton ’85 Gregg Clifton has extensive experience in the collegiate and professional sports worlds. He has advised numerous professional franchises on general labor and employment issues, including Title III ADA regulatory compliance and wage-and-hour issues. He serves as lead counsel for several Major League Baseball teams in their salary arbitration matters and has represented NCAA and NAIA collegiate clients regarding rules compliance and investigatory matters and in disciplinary hearings. |
PANELISTS
Garrett Broshuis Associate, Korein Tillery Much of Garrett Broshuis’ complex litigation practice is sports-related. He represents dozens of former minor league baseball players in a wage-and-hour action challenging the pay scheme for minor leaguers. He also represents clients in securities litigation emanating from the failure of the mortgage-backed securities market. His appellate experience includes briefing and arguing multiple cases in the Missouri Court of Appeals. |
Darren Heitner Founder, Heitner Legal, P.L.L.C. Darren Heitner has served as legal counsel to some of the most well known individuals and corporate entities in the world, including NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown, NBA superstar Draymond Green, full-service sports agency Rosenhaus Sports Representation, massively successful nutritional and dietary supplement company Evlution Nutrition, and retired athletes such as Manny Ramirez and Luis Castillo. |
Kevin S. Parker New York State Senator, 21st District A lifelong resident of Brooklyn, Senator Parker was first elected to the New York State Senate in 2002 to represent the diverse 21st Senatorial District, which includes Flatbush, East Flatbush, Midwood, Ditmas Park, Kensington, Windsor Terrace, and Park Slope. The eight-term lawmaker is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy and Telecommunications and proudly serving as the whip for the Democratic majority. |
Angela A. Smedley Associate, Winston & Strawn LLP Much of Angela Smedley’s litigation practice involves the application of the National Labor Relations Act, the Labor Management Relations Act, and the Federal Arbitration Act to the unique landscape of professional sports. In this context, she has represented clients such as the National Football League Players Association, the National Basketball Players Association, and a variety of individual professional athletes and sports agents. She also has experience representing multinational corporations in class-action antitrust litigation, including in multiple auto parts cases in one of the largest multi-district litigations to date. |
