Beloff Named General Counsel of England and Wales Cricket Board

England and Wales Cricket Board has appointed senior sports lawyer Catherine Beloff as its new general counsel.

Beloff will join the ECB in September and will oversee legal strategy for the governing body’s commercial, governance, regulatory and litigation matters. She will also join the ECB’s executive leadership group.

Beloff arrives after a decade with the British Horseracing Authority where she served as general counsel and company secretary. During her tenure she also held wider operational oversight responsibilities including governance and business functions.

Beloff was also a senior member of the global law firm DLA Piper’s sports practice for 10 years, advising governing bodies, clubs, athletes and rights holders on regulatory and commercial matters.

ECB Chief Executive Richard Gould said Beloff’s appointment was a huge addition for the governing body.

“We are very pleased to have someone with Catherine’s experience and knowledge,” Gould said. “She is going to play a vital role in our sport so that it is not only legal, but that our sport is safe to play and not be put at risk in terms of reputational risk.”

Beloff has also been a prominent figure in the broader sports law community and served as chair of the British Association for Sport and Law and more than a decade on the board. Her appointment comes at a crucial time for the ECB as sports governing bodies are wrestling with governance, commercial rights, athlete regulation and reputational management.
