In recognition of his extraordinary service and lasting impact, the University has recently announced the establishment of the Professor Steve McKelvey ’86 Endowed Scholarship, a tribute that ensures his legacy will continue to support future generations of students pursuing careers in professional baseball.
The endowed scholarship honors more than 20 years of McKelvey’s teaching,
graduate program leadership, alumni stewardship, and heartfelt dedication to students. It will provide financial support to undergraduate or graduate students in the McCormack Department of Sport Management who aspire to build careers in baseball, whether on the operations, business, or agency side of the game. Eligible students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, demonstrate financial need, and be engaged in a related internship or full-time role—criteria that reflect McKelvey’s longstanding emphasis on academic excellence, practical experience, and professional preparation.
A 1986 alumnus of the MS in Sport Management program, McKelvey embodies the very ideals he has spent his career instilling in students. Before returning to UMass as a faculty member, he worked in the Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, gaining firsthand experience that would later inform his teaching and mentorship. Over the years, he taught courses in sport law, sport promotion and sales, sport sponsorship, and ambush marketing, always emphasizing the real-world application of theory and the importance of ethical, informed leadership in sport.
Known affectionately as the program’s quintessential “ideas man,” McKelvey combined tireless work ethic with creative vision. He played a pivotal role in developing scholarships and financial initiatives that connected alumni passions with student success, helping to recruit, retain, and launch students into meaningful careers. His efforts were instrumental in cultivating one of the most robust alumni networks in professional sports, particularly within Major League Baseball front offices, where UMass graduates continue to make their mark.
That impact is perhaps best captured through the voices of the alumni whose lives and careers McKelvey helped shape. Mark Scialabba (MBA/MS ’06) credits McKelvey as a central figure in the program’s global reputation. “The UMass Sport Management program has long been recognized as a world-class leader in sport management education, a distinction due in large part to the exceptional expertise and dedication of its faculty,” Scialabba said. “Among these distinguished educators, Professor Steve McKelvey embodied the program’s unwavering commitment to excellence through his deep knowledge of the sports industry and his remarkable mentorship of students and alumni alike.” He added that McKelvey’s commitment to bridging the gap between the classroom and the professional world helped launch countless careers across the sports landscape.
Kyle Bamberger (MBA/MS ’19) echoed that sentiment, emphasizing McKelvey’s unmatched care for students. “You can’t mention the McCormack program without thinking of Steve McKelvey,” Bamberger said. “His level of care for his students is unmatched and is a significant reason why the program has become what it is.” Bamberger noted that McKelvey’s mentorship began even before he applied to UMass and continued throughout his time in the program, strengthened by their shared love of baseball. “The fraternity of baseball professionals from UMass is a special one, and Steve is at the center of it,” he said.
Neal Huntington (MS ’92), a longtime executive in professional baseball, described McKelvey as both an advocate and a friend. “Steve was a tireless advocate for the UMass Sport Management program and students,” Huntington said. “He was not only a tremendous ambassador and representative for UMass, but he is a terrific person and friend.” Huntington highlighted McKelvey’s passion for helping people secure professional opportunities and guiding them through personal and professional growth—qualities that made him a true difference-maker in the industry.
In addition to the newly established scholarship, McKelvey’s contributions have been formally recognized through honors such as the President’s Award in Appreciation of Outstanding Service from SRLA. Yet those who know him best would argue that his greatest achievements are measured not in awards, but in the thousands of students empowered by his belief in their potential.
The launch of the Professor Steve McKelvey ’86 Endowed Scholarship also includes a powerful call to action for the UMass community. Patrick and Kathleen (McKelvey) Burke have pledged to amplify donor support by contributing $2,500 for every $1,000 raised, up to $50,000, accelerating progress toward the $200,000 goal needed to fully endow the scholarship. Every contribution, regardless of size, helps preserve McKelvey’s legacy, strengthen the Isenberg community, and ensure that future students can benefit from the same opportunities he worked so tirelessly to create.
