Sports Lawyer Mat Jessep Creates New Firm – Game Legal
Australian sports, entertainment, and esports lawyer Mat Jessep has established a new firm, Game Legal, offering corporate and commercial legal advice, along with a sister business, Game Consulting, going beyond legal advice to deliver commercial and corporate governance consulting services.
Leveraging off of a career in brand marketing before becoming a lawyer and more than 10 years’ experience as a lawyer, as well as academic experience as a sports law and business lecturer at the University of Melbourne Law School, Victoria University College of Sport & Exercise Science, and the University of Technology Sydney Law Faculty and Business School, Jessep has established Game Legal and Game Consulting to deliver focused legal, governance, and strategic commercial advice to clients involved in Sports, Esports, and Pop Culture – Gaming, Media, Tech, Internet, Brands & IP, Entertainment, TV, Music, Film, Art, & Fashion – as well as to Businesses and for new Start-Ups.
Though both new ventures, Game Legal and Game Consulting build off Jessep’s solid international track record and reputation in sports and entertainment, and are uniquely positioned in the sports, esports, and pop culture sectors as a niche provider of commercial, governance, and legal services.
Game Legal and Game Consulting operate from within the historic Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in the heart of Sydney’s sports and entertainment precinct of Moore Park. While predominantly Sydney-based, Jessep services clients all over Australia, as well as in North America, the UK, Europe, and Asia.
Clients are offered services on a traditional time-based billing basis, though fixed fees and value-based pricing is preferred. Jessep also offers outsourced in-house counsel advice for clients with ongoing legal needs without the constant expense of a full-time employed resource.
Jessep said of the launch: “I’m excited and thankful to have this opportunity to continue to focus on my clients in the dynamic, unique, and fast-paced sports, esports, and pop culture sectors, offering greater focus, deep sector experience, real value, and additional commercial services and benefits.
“After an early career involving sports and entertainment operations and brand sponsorships, I’ve devoted the bulk of my legal career to the sports and entertainment sectors, and more recently to esports and gaming.
“As these sectors and my clients continue to grow, I look forward to building Game Legal and Game Consulting around my clients to offer better support and greater value to them and their stakeholders.”
